New scrutiny for drainage system
After every heavy rain event, urban floods have become a common thing in the Tricity region. Authorities conduct annual drain-cleaning drives before the monsoon but residents complain of overflowing drains, clogged stormwater channels and slow clearance of water.
Urban planning experts have long flagged rapid urbanisation, more paved surfaces and ageing drainage infrastructure as reducing the city’s ability to soak up or divert heavy downfalls quickly.
The latest episode has once again underlined the need for long term drainage improvements instead of seasonal maintenance.
IMD predicts more rains in store
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather warnings for Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, warning of an active monsoon spell with heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days.
More rain could worsen flooding in vulnerable areas and people have been urged to keep away from flooded roads where they can, be careful near seasonal streams and keep up with official weather warnings.
What Residents Can Anticipate
Heavy rain could slow traffic, cause temporary road closures and delays during office hours. In some places, the flooding is not expected to ease until the water subsides.
The return of the episodes also highlights the need for better urban drainage planning, especially as extreme rainfall events are more frequent during the monsoon season.
