Ruturaj Gaikwad Appointed West Zone Captain While Prithvi Shaw Returns for the 2026 Duleep Trophy

Maharashtra’s Ruturaj Gaikwad will take on a big leadership role in Indian cricket as he has been appointed captain of West Zone for the 2026-27 Duleep Trophy. The selectors announced a strong 15-player roster on July 20, 2026, with veteran domestic performers, internationals and emerging talent included. The return of Prithvi Shaw provides an extra layer of intrigue to a squad gearing up to kick-off its campaign against North Zone in Bengaluru.

Duleep Trophy 2026-27 West Zone Squad

Mumbai all-rounder Shams Mulani is the vice-captain of the West Zone team for the Duleep Trophy 2026-27, with Gaikwad being the captain. The competition will be held between August 23 and September 10 at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The West Zone will face the North Zone in a four-day quarter-final from August 23 to 26. The final will be played from September 6 to 10.

Ruturaj Gaikwad Steps Up as Captain

Gaikwad has replaced Shardul Thakur as the West Zone captain after the squad reached the semi-finals in the last edition. Central Zone proceeded on the strength of a first innings lead and went on to win the championship. Thakur is still a vital member of the new-look squad despite the leadership shift.

Gaikwad has good captaincy expertise having led Chennai Super Kings in Indian Premier League. He was also engaged in India A’s assignments versus Sri Lanka A lately. The Duleep Trophy gives him another opportunity to show his leadership and further cement his claims in the red-ball format.

Prithvi Shaw recalled to the West Zone squad

Prithvi Shaw comes back into the side after being rested for West Zone last season. The opening batsman has shifted from Mumbai to Maharashtra and now joins Gaikwad in a batting order that also comprises Sarfaraz Khan, Musheer Khan, Jaymeet Patel and Shivalik Sharma.

Shaw first broke into a Duleep Trophy squad as a 17-year-old in 2017 but his career has been a tale of brilliant performances and tough disappointments. He hasn’t played an IPL game since 2024 and domestic competition is a good opportunity to recover momentum. A good tournament may help him reassert himself as one of India’s leading red-ball starting alternatives.

Mumbai Core Strengthens Line Up

Mumbai had six representatives in the squad with Mulani, Sarfaraz, Musheer, Thakur, Tanush Kotian and Tushar Deshpande. The two wicketkeeping choices picked are Harvik Desai and Urvil Patel, giving the team management the liberty to chose their combination as per match conditions.

In the batting category, there are aggressive stroke makers and there are guys who can construct long innings. This balance will enable West Zone to adapt to varied events without being too dependent on one person.

Attack has pace and spin in West Zone bowling

The pace department comprises Thakur, Deshpande, Mukesh Choudhary and Atit Sheth. The primary spin possibilities are provided by Mulani, Kotian and Siddharth Desai. Six standby players have also been named to cover for injuries or availability problems throughout the competition. One glaring miss is Siddhesh Lad, who had an impressive 2025-26 Ranji Trophy campaign.

The veteran Mumbai hitter amassed 774 runs in 11 innings including five hundreds but missed out on making the final selection. It is the basis of the fierce battle for slots in West Zone that he is not here. West Zone enter the tournament with depth across departments with Gaikwad leading and Shaw returning. The first game versus North Zone will be a measure of how their individual quality and domestic experience can be converted into a successful Duleep Trophy campaign.
