BMW X5 2027 Gets Five Engine Options as Buyers Wait for the New SUV

The BMW X5 2027 is shaping up to be one of the most major premium SUV introductions for BMW in years. The all-new vehicle enters its fifth generation with a redesigned design, more technology and a larger range of powertrains than ever. The biggest news isn’t only the design update for buyers waiting to upgrade. The fact is BMW is setting the X5 up to cater for a variety of clients, from the typical petrol and diesel buyer to plug-in hybrid, fully electric and even hydrogen fuel-cell customers. The new X5 will be the first BMW model to be offered with five drivetrains.

BMW X5 engines

The new SUV’s most notable feature is its broad powertrain approach. The 2027 BMW X5 will be offered in petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery electric and hydrogen fuel-cell versions and sold around the world. “This gives BMW a flexible portfolio at a time when consumers are divided between combustion engines and electric vehicles. Petrol, plug-in hybrid and electric variants will lead the line-up in countries including the US, with diesel to be the preserve of mostly markets outside the US. Hydrogen will come later in the model cycle as the BMW iX5 Hydrogen.

A New Look for the 5th Generation X5

2027 BMW X5 gets cleaner, more modern design. The SUV shows the brand’s new design direction with a sharper front end, thinner lighting and a more mechanical look. Design references BMW’s Neue Klasse language, which will also be used on upcoming electric models from the firm, reports suggest. The new X5 should seem more upright and assertive, but not too distant from the classic design that has made the SUV so popular since its original iteration. The outward upgrades are crucial because the X5 competes in a hotly contested luxury SUV sector. People shopping for cars against the Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Genesis and Range Rover demand a quality design, but also something that feels modern. BMW seems to be trying to do both here. The SUV receives a more sophisticated look, but it nevertheless maintains the robust road presence that X5 buyers often demand.

Petrol and Diesel Models Still Available

Even with electric vehicles entering the lineup, BMW is not abandoning combustion engines. The petrol variant is said to get a six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid tech. The X5 40 and X5 40 xDrive are confirmed as the major launch models in the U.S. with the all-wheel-drive X5 40 xDrive will arrive first. Diesel will also continue in the worldwide line up, however it will depend on the market. This is important for purchasers in markets where diesel SUVs continue to be appreciated for their long-distance capability and high torque. Keeping diesel in certain areas gives the X5 broader international appeal than directing every consumer to one technology.

Plug-in Hybrid Delivers Power, Daily EV Driving

The plug-in hybrid X5 50e xDrive will remain an important part of the portfolio. It blends an electric motor with a six-cylinder petrol engine, providing purchasers with a useful halfway house between a conventional SUV and a full EV. BMW said the X5 50e xDrive will arrive in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2027. This version should appeal to buyers who want electric driving for their daily trips but still need the reassurance of a gas engine for longer journeys. Plug-in hybrids are particularly appealing in the luxury SUV category because they deliver solid performance without necessitating a complete shift in driving habits.

Range Expansion First Fully Electric BMW iX5 joins the range

The greatest change for the 2027 X5 family is the launch of the BMW iX5. This will be the first fully electric X5 and the first all-electric vehicle made by BMW at Plant Spartanburg in the U.S. BMW says the iX5 will utilise its sixth generation eDrive technology, including 800-volt architecture, quick charging and bidirectional charging capability. The iX5 is BMW’s own answer to the luxury electric SUVs of other companies. It also gives long time X5 buyers a chance to switch to an electric without giving up the familiar size and character of the X5 family. That may be a wise play, with many premium consumers interested in EVs, but still wanting the comfort, seating position and convenience of a classic SUV.

Hydrogen Version to Follow

BMW is also working on a hydrogen fuel-cell variant, named the iX5 Hydrogen. This model will not be part of the first wave of 2027 X5 variants, but will be produced in series at a later date. BMW has been working on hydrogen technology for years, viewing it as an additional zero-emissions option, particularly for buyers who desire quick recharging and long-distance capability. The success of this model will depend very much on the refuelling infrastructure and so this model is unlikely to be available on a big scale initially like the petrol, hybrid or electric versions. But its presence says BMW thinks the X5 should be ready for more than one future.

Launch Timeline and Buyer Expectations

BMW says the BMW X5 40 xDrive will begin rolling out in October 2026. The rear-wheel-drive X5 40, X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid and iX5 60 xDrive will debut in the first quarter of 2027. A V8-powered M Performance model is also due to appear later in 2027. If you’re shopping for a new SUV, you may want to time your purchase and decide which powertrain you prefer. Those who want a classic six-cylinder X5 might not have to wait as long. If you want the plug-in hybrid or electric iX5, you’ll have to wait until early 2027. In either case, the new X5 delivers BMW a more versatile and more powerful response to a shifting luxury SUV market.
