Aamir Khan Clarifies His 3 Idiots Character: Aamir Khan has addressed the most common charges surrounding 3 Idiots. He said that the common connection was a misperception and not part of the film’s creative history. Khan further said Wangchuk’s contribution should be respected without having any link with a popular movie character.

The analogy is easy to understand. Rancho defies the traditional classroom approaches, promotes the practical learning and encourages the pupils to seek information rather than marks. Wangchuk is most linked with reform, innovation and sustainable growth of education in Ladakh. These common threads helped the public accept the notion that the character was modelled on him.
But parallels don’t necessarily imply direct inspiration. There have also been reports that Wangchuk had previously distanced himself from being called the real-life Phunsukh Wangdu. The association has been enhanced over time by the film’s educational message, its unorthodox hero and its Ladakh connection, albeit many engaged in the creation have provided more complex justifications.

Rancho’s background looks to be more influenced by more than one particular figure. “The character’s learning-first mindset was partly inspired by an anonymous FTII student who attended classes under another person’s identity because he wanted knowledge rather than a credential,” said Rajkumar Hirani.
Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra revealed separately that bits of Rancho were drawn from his own days as a film student. He also linked the name Phunsukh Wangdu to a former FTII classmate, Phuntsok. In addition, 3 Idiots was based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone, while the film included extra people, settings and concepts.
These disparate descriptions show Rancho was a composite fictional character. Personal recollections, campus stories and literary material and the filmmakers’ more general criticism of excessively competitive education may have informed his personality.

Khan’s statement was not made in condemnation of Wangchuk. He stated he was concerned about the educator’s health as he continued his hunger strike and that people might support his work on its own merits. The difference is between two questions: Did Wangchuk inspire Rancho? And did his real-life work merit the public’s attention?
It may not end the discussion altogether, since the public association has existed for years. It does, nevertheless, offer a clearer picture of how Khan and other members of the creative team describe the character. It is not because Rancho as an individual is powerful, but that he represents a greater notion that education should inspire curiosity, creativity, practical knowledge and independent thinking.
