PM Internship Scheme Receives Over 1.65 Lakh Offers While Joining Numbers Remain Low
There is strong demand for the Prime Minister Internship Scheme from companies, but early data suggests a big gap between offers made and successful joinings. In the first two pilot rounds, more than 1.65 lakh offers were received but only 16,068 people accepted their internships. The numbers are a major hurdle for an effort to pair young people up with real-world work experience at top Indian companies.

In the second round there were more than 83,000 offers but only 7,308 people joined up. Third pilot round shows a better response
The third wave of pilots proved to be more positive. Around 340 organisations have offered 1.22 lakh positions in 31 categories. Uttar Pradesh led with 2,038 joiners, followed by Maharashtra (771) and Assam (699). The round began in April and runs until December 2026 so the sum could climb.
Refusal of Offers by Candidates
The low conversion rate means that even if there is an internship, it is not possible for the chosen person to take it. Previous research have pointed out limited location alternatives, imprecise work profiles, communication problems and doubts about the value of the experience. Or if the workplace is far from home then the opportunity can be hard to accept too. The cost of travel, housing and subsistence is often significant. Later, a parliamentary group critiqued the low participation and high dropout rates and called for a higher stipend and more flexible eligibility standards.
Rules Revision to Increase Participation
The government has made various changes in the components of the strategy. Eligibility age has been enhanced from 21-24 years to 18-25 years. The monthly financial help has increased from Rs 5,000 to a minimum of Rs 9,000 and the tenure of the internship has been reduced from 12 months to six to nine months. Final year undergraduates and postgraduates may also apply if they satisfy the prerequisites and obtain the consent of their institution. These changes may reduce the financial and academic barriers experienced in the past rounds.
Growth of outreach and industry involvement
The initiative will provide one crore internships in prominent businesses over five years, giving participants exposure to real business environments and a diversity of occupations. Now the outreach is done through colleges, skill institutions, smaller cities and rural areas. Close proximity, timely communication, and applicant assistance will be vital to the programme transforming stated opportunities into completed internships.
What the figures reveal
The third round demonstrates that increased financial support and greater eligibility can boost participation. But the distinction between offers and joinings in the first two rounds is a word of warning. The amount of internships offered by organisations is less important than whether candidates can afford them, access them and complete them for long-term success. Better matching and more transparent information on duties, location and career worth should help more young people to accept suitable jobs with confidence.
