NEET UG Counselling 2026 MBBS Seats Increased to 1.37 Lakh Across India
India Medical Admission Scenario for academic year 2026-27 sees a big rise. It will add more opportunities for NEET UG candidates in the next counseling process. Now with MBBS seats being added, the total seats in India is 1,36,939. This is 9,911 more than the 1,27,028 seats available in the previous cycle, an annual growth of almost 7.8 per cent. The increase is expected to expand access but the struggle for inexpensive government colleges will be tough.
Seat Matrix for NEET UG Counselling 2026
NEET UG Counselling 2026 seat matrix includes 63,296 places in government medical colleges and 73,643 seats in private institutes. The allowed capacity is 823 medical institutions with 441 government and 382 private colleges. With these figures, candidates will be able to compare real alternatives, before registering, filling preferences and locking choices. Institutes of National Importance like AIIMS and JIPMER are not included in the matrix, their seats are managed individually within the overall admission process.
Growth boosted by private colleges
This year the main driver of the rise in seats was private institutions. Government institutions have added 2,111 seats, and private colleges 7,800 seats. That means almost 79 percent of the new seats awarded came from the private sector. The increase allows more people to get to medical school but prices, location, hospital exposure and acknowledged status should be assessed well in advance of choosing a college.
25 New Medical Colleges Established
There is a total contribution of 2400 MBBS seats in the 2026-27 cycle from as many as 25 newly set up medical colleges . Seven are government colleges and 18 are private colleges. Of this extra capacity 400 government seats and 2000 private seats have been added by the new colleges. The rest capacity has been created by enhancing the admission limit in the current colleges. The increase comes after regulatory changes allowing qualifying colleges to request for an earlier rise in their intake if they meet the relevant standards.
States with Highest MBBS Seat Capacity
Karnataka has the maximum total capacity of 15,395 seats, Uttar Pradesh is second with 14,000, Tamil Nadu third with 13,999 and Maharashtra fourth with 13,099. Karnataka too had the largest total gain with 1,300 new seats added. Tamil Nadu, adding 950, Rajasthan 900, West Bengal 825, Telangana 810 and Uttar Pradesh 800. Maharashtra has the biggest government-college capacity with 6,000 seats and Karnataka the most private-college availability with 10,995 seats.
What Candidates Should Do During Counselling
Candidates should make a preferred list on the basis of rank, category, domicile rules, fees, location and type of college. The counselling for All India Quota seats and some central or institutional categories will be conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee. Other acceptable possibilities should be explored by candidates contacting the concerned state admission office. Final seat matrix may get altered owing to regulatory or other appeal rulings and one needs to check with official MCC and NMC portals before every round.
More seats could improve your chances of getting in, but it doesn’t reduce the need to choose your seats wisely. Candidates must have their paperwork ready and adhere strictly to the deadlines. They should not choose institutions without knowing about the tuition fees, service bonds, lodging, clinical facilities and the approved intake.
